Thomas has a moderate intellectual disability and would like a buddy to cycle with, walk with or have lunch with at the residential care park
Who is Thomas?
Thomas is a 33 year old man with a moderate intellectual disability and autism. Comparable to a 4 to 7 year old. Emotionally he functions at the age of a 1.5 to 3 year old. Thomas laughs a lot and is often cheerful. He is calm, social and stubborn! A special characteristic is that he remembers a lot of what is said to him. Thomas likes good food, cycling, horse riding, listening to music, going to the city and he used to paint. He likes a joke; the worse the better! For Thomas the most important thing is that life must be clear and manageable for him. He must know where he stands. Compare it with his emotional level of a 1.5 year old; a great need for emotional security, structure, predictability and routines. In addition to his autism he has an obsessive-compulsive disorder OCD. We would love to tell you more about his disability and how we deal with it, to offer Thomas the best possible life. If Thomas knows you a little, he will also show interest in you. He is grateful for all the activities that are undertaken with him. His family is very important to him. Will you be his buddy?
What is Thomas asking?
We are looking for a volunteer who will come especially for him once a month. Someone who recognizes his request for clarity, transparency and safety. Someone who wants to invest in building a bond. First of all, this will be within the group where he lives for a while. After that, this can be expanded to activities at the residential care park, such as walking, cycling and having a bite to eat at our Brasserie. Are you reliable, clear, predictable and do you do what you say and say what you do? Do you have a sense of humor? Do you want to get to know his supervisors to see if it could be a good fit? Who knows, you might become a buddy for Thomas and let Thomas enjoy the beautiful moments. Of course, you will not be thrown in at the deep end and you will be trained and updated. As a volunteer, you have access to free online courses.
