Summary
Do you want to do something about removing prejudices in a really practical way? Then register as a bridge builder - floor manager at Mensenbieb!Detailed description
1. Job description:
Together with others you prepare a Mensenbieb event. The goal of De Mensenbieb is to increase understanding between people. We do this by organizing a 'library of people'. Visitors to the Mensenbieb 'borrow' someone with whom they can have a conversation. Our living books are people with often a remarkable story. People you might otherwise not speak to in person. Through these conversations, the Mensenbieb wants to make prejudices and certain topics open for discussion in order to promote mutual respect and understanding in society. De Mensenbieb organizes loans in various places, including libraries, schools, companies and festivals.
As a floor manager you are a bridge builder. Together with a number of other volunteers, you are responsible for the preparation, implementation and aftercare of a Mensenbieb event. You maintain contact with the living books and with other volunteers involved in the event.
The emphasis of the work is in the preparation of the events and their implementation. This includes planning and maintaining contact with the living books, visiting the location in advance, organizing required materials, preparing the living books for their role, etc. On the day of the event you are responsible for the entire course of events, such as contact with the organization (library, school, company), guidance of the human librarians, the reception and guidance of the living books, the organization of the conversations and the guidance of visitors. Afterwards you are responsible for the 'de-briefing' of the living books, the evaluations and their administrative processing.
2. Required knowledge or skills:
As a floor manager you have excellent social skills: after all, you are the link between three parties: the applicant, the living books and other volunteers, and of course the people who want to borrow a living book. Being able to deal with people from different backgrounds in a respectful manner is self-evident. Tact, perseverance, being a good listener, being solution-oriented and being able to switch quickly are important qualities to be able to perform this role successfully and with pleasure. Because you are the first point of contact for everyone involved, good accessibility is important. Furthermore, it is a must that you can organize well and keep an overview; you use a (shared) digital environment.
3. What you get from it:
You contribute in a very concrete way to realizing the Human Library's objective: bringing people together and contributing to connection and mutual understanding in our society. You meet many wonderful people. In short: you matter.
To become well acquainted with your role as an (all-round) floor manager, you will be trained by a fellow floor manager. During the training period there is an opportunity to gain experience as a living book, as a reader and also to get acquainted with the other volunteer roles at the Mensenbieb. You will also attend the preparation meeting for the living books.
Expenses incurred will be reimbursed; Once you have been trained, we offer the opportunity for a volunteer allowance.
4. Working hours:
Working hours depend on the number of Mensenbieb events. There are currently an average of two events per month. In addition to the event itself - which usually takes a whole day - preparation and aftercare require time, much of which you can plan yourself. You are expected to work on this for several hours a week. Outliers of up to about 10 hours per week may occur.
